Digital TV is Projected to Reach to 135 mln Homes in India by 2014, Suggests IS Advisors

With the expected increase in the percentage of digital Television households in India and a decline in the analog TV transmission there will be a sharp increase in the sale of Set top Boxes across India with increase in the number of Digital homes as each digital household would be required a separate STB attached to their Television sets.

With digitization now a mandate, the Set Top Box industry is all set to grow on the back of increasing C&S and DTH TV set penetration.

By 2014 the Digital TV is projected to reach to 135 million homes, with DTH reaching 54 million customers.

According to the report “Set Top Box Industry in India (2011-15))” by IS Advisors, India imports more than 95 per cent of Set Top Boxes where more than 80 per cent comes from China and South Korea. At present 0.1 million are manufactured in India per year and 0.5-0.7 million are imported during the same period.

The expected requirement of STBs in India will increase by 2¬3 times of the current imports and will almost touch 20 million per year.

The sale of LCD TV is rapidly increasing in India. The viewers are moving towards better picture quality, better sound quality and multimedia applications. With the increasing number of LCD TVs in India the need for High Definition (HD) enabled Set top boxes is expected to shoot up.

The LCD TV sales in India are expected to grow at a CAGR of 25 per cent during 2010-2013 to 3.7 Million units by the end of 2013.
