LONDON – In 2010 the consumption of salt on European Union (EU) market accounted for 57.8 mln tons. The demand increased by 12% year over year.
About 90-95% of EU demand is ensured by interior production. In 2010 the production of salt in EU increased by 7% and amounted to 55.3 mln tons. Germany dominates EU salt market both in production and consumption. In 2010 it manufactured and consumed 38% and 35% of the total EU salt respectively.
Only 5% of the salt produced in Western Europe is aimed for human consumption. The majority is manufactured for industrial purposes.
With the demand growth, import deliveries increased as well. In 2010 the import share in consumption achieved 10%. Tunisia and Egypt are the main salt suppliers for EU market.
