LONDON – EU-27 demand for hydrogen fluoride (hydrofluoric acid) in 2010 increased 16.3% but still lower than 2008 pre-crisis level. The EU demand for hydrogen fluoride is following a downgrade trend in recent years. Within 5-year period hydrogen fluoride demand fell 20%. In 2010 EU-27 hydrogen fluoride consumption amounted 170,455 tons.
EU has used to be self-sufficient in hydrogen fluoride. Import supplies share approximately 1% in total EU consumption. The main supplier is the US, which totals 51.64% of EU import deliveries.
After the sharp fall in 2009, hydrogen fluoride EU output has improved and reached 382,255 tons according to 2010 year results. 50% of hydrogen fluoride produced in EU, stay inside the enterprises for further processing. This amount represents the in-plant consumption and enlarges EU-27 hydrogen fluoride demand.
The major producers of hydrogen fluoride within EU-27 are Germany and Italy. These countries manufacture 80%.
Hydrogen fluoride (hydrofluoric acid) is used primarily for fluorocarbons and fluoropolymers production. Hydrogen fluoride demand has been declining since early 1990s because of proved chlorinated fluorocarbons harmful effect of stratospheric ozone depletion. The Kyoto Protocol signed by EU among others limited fluorocarbons using and therefore stimulated soften in hydrogen fluoride demand.
Hydrogen Fluoride (Hydrofluoric Acid) market in EU-27 is comprehensively reviewed and analyzed in the report “Hydrogen Fluoride (Hydrofluoric Acid): European Union Market Outlook 2011 and Forecast till 2016” recently published by The Market Publishers, Ltd.
