Animation & Gaming Landscape in India Witnesses Growth According to IS Advisors

The social gaming landscape in the country is witnessing a growth momentum due to easy access to mobile and Internet facilities.

The growth of social networks sites, the time spent by users on them, the high entertainment value proposition and opportunity to engage in fun and casual interaction with friends, was fuelling the social gaming market.

As the demand for single and multi-player games continues to soar, animation content production is also increasing. This demand has been further fueled by the popularity of social networks. Although, India lags behind the western countries, the growth rate in production and consumption of gaming applications and content is showing a rapid increase.

According to the report “Animation & Gaming Industry in India (2011-15)” by IS Advisors, animation is simply a rapid sequencing of images displayed in succession to create the illusion of movement. The images can be in 2D or 3D. The animation industry in India has three key segments: Animation Entertainment, Visual Effects (VFX) and Custom Content Development.

In absolute terms custom content development is the largest segment today, followed by animation entertainment and VFX. In 2012, custom content development is expected to remain the largest segment, followed by animation entertainment and VFX.

At the moment, the gaming industry is an emerging segment in India. The industry in India, despite its challenges, continues to grow at a fast pace driven by mobile and online gaming. While China has been one of the fastest growing markets especially for online gaming, India is still expected to grow rapidly in the coming years.

The gaming industry has four key segments- Mobile gaming, PC gaming, Console Gaming and Online Gaming.

Console gaming (including hardware) is the largest contributor to gaming revenues in India accounting for over 42 percent of the total gaming revenues followed by mobile gaming, online gaming and PC gaming. In 2012, console gaming is expected to retain market share and still account for the largest share of the Indian gaming market, followed by mobile gaming, online gaming and finally PC gaming.

There is a great demand for animation today. Hollywood and international projects are no longer the only ones utilizing the technology. A number of Bollywood films, vernacular movies and ad commercials have also fine tuned their production and opted for animation over the conventional method.
