LONDON – Last year, the global coating market hit about USD 90 billion and is expected to grow about 10% to USD 99 billion in 2011. Building decorative coating is the largest application area, accounting for approximately 45% of the total market. This is followed by vehicle coating, making up roughly 15%, and protective & marine coating (PMC), accounting for about 12%. General industrial coating stands at roughly 10%, followed by powder coating, wood coating, coil coating, packaging coating, etc.

Being the leader in terms of infrastructure and real estate investment, geographically, China is the world’s largest coating market. In value terms, the market approximated USD 18.9 billion in 2011, 54% of which was attributable to decorative coatings. It is estimated that China’s real estate market will rebound after the long-term suppression, with the market size of decorative coatings in the country likely to exceed USD 12 billion.
