LONDON – The department store chains in Asia-Pacific are facing high levels of competition from hypermarkets, discounters and online retailers, which has intensified further since the onset of global economic slowdown in 2008. China represents the largest department store retail market in Asia-Pacific. However, the region’s department store sector is dominated by the Japanese companies as the department store sector is more consolidated in Japan in comparison to China.
Hyundai was the top performer among the leading department stores, which was attributed to the high scores the company received for operational efficiency and financial performance pillars. Wangfujing performed strongest under the scale and growth pillar, but weaker than the department stores channel under operational efficiency and financial performance pillar. Isetan Mitsukoshi’s performance was weaker than the channel average in all areas.
