Methyl Methacrylate (methyl 2-methylpropenoate, abbreviated as MMA) is a liquid colourless organic compound having the formula C5H8O2. The product is derived by several routes, the most typical being the ACH (acetone cyanohydrin) process, with acetone and hydrogen cyanide employed as basic materials. Methyl Methacrylate can also be synthesized from coal-derived syngas, via the methcrylonitrile (MAN) process, from methyl propylate and formaldehyde.
The bulk of Methyl Methacrylate (nearly 80 per cent) goes to make PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate acrylic plastics). The chemical is also needed to produce the copolymer MBS (methyl methacrylate-butadiene-styrene), with the latter serving as PVC modifier.
