Ethanol (otherwise called ethyl alcohol, grain alcohol, spirits, pure alcohol, etc.) is volatile, flammable, colorless liquid having a strong, characteristic smell. It is widely used as a gasoline additive or fuel, an ingredient of alcoholic beverages/perfumes/ paints/tinctures and a feedstock for the production of such organic compounds as ethyl esters, diethyl ether, butadiene, among others. The Americas leave behind other regions in terms of the fuel ethanol production, with Brazil, Canada and the USA being the major producers on a global scale. China, India and some European countries are other prominent manufacturers.
