Adipic Acid is a white-coloured crystalline powder-like compound, with a formula of (CH2)4(COOH)2. Rarely found in a natural setting, the chemical is extensively manufactured on a commercial basis. Historically prepared by oxidizing different fats, Adipic Acid is made by way of mixing cyclohexanol with cyclohexanone into the so-called ketone-alcohol oil, followed by the latter’s oxidiation with nitric acid. Other routes involve the carbonylation of butadiene, new single-step processes, alongside the methods based on green chemistry’s principles.
Nearly 2.5 billion kilos of Adipic Acid are produced yearly, with major end-users being nylon 6-6, plasticizers, polyurethanes, foods and other applications.
