About Thoratec Corp.

Thoratec Corporation engages in the development, manufacture, and marketing of proprietary medical devices used for circulatory support. The company also develops, manufactures, and markets point-of-care diagnostic test systems and skin incision products.

Divisions

The company operates in two divisions, Cardiovascular and International Technidyne Corporation (ITC).

CARDIOVASCULAR DIVISION

The Cardiovascular division, for advanced heart failure (HF), develops, manufactures, and markets proprietary medical devices used for mechanical circulatory support (MCS). Its primary product lines are its ventricular assist devices (VADs): the HeartMate II Left Ventricular Assist System (HeartMate II), the HeartMate Left Ventricular Assist System (HeartMate XVE), the Thoratec Paracorporeal Ventricular Assist Device (PVAD), and the Thoratec Implantable Ventricular Assist Device (IVAD). In addition, for acute HF, the company markets the CentriMag Blood Pumping System (CentriMag), which is manufactured by Levitronix LLC (Levitronix) and distributed by the company in the U.S. under a distribution agreement with Levitronix. The company also manufactures a vascular access graft for renal dialysis. VADs supplement the pumping function of the heart in patients with advanced HF.

The HeartMate II

The HeartMate II is an implantable, electrically powered, continuous flow, left ventricular assist device consisting of a miniature rotary blood pump designed to provide intermediate and long-term MCS. The HeartMate II is designed to improve survival and quality of life and to provide five to ten years of circulatory support for a range of advanced HF patients. The HeartMate II can be used in patients with New York Heart Association Class IIIB and IV end-stage left ventricular failure who have received optimal medical therapy for at least forty-five of the last sixty days, and who are not candidates for cardiac transplantation. The HeartMate II received approval for bridge-to-transplantation (BTT) and received approval for use in HF patients who are not eligible for heart transplantation (Destination Therapy (DT)). The HeartMate II is approved in Europe and Canada. During 2009 the company launched its new HeartMate external peripherals (Go Gear), including new batteries, charger and power module.

The HeartMate XVE

The HeartMate XVE is an implantable, pulsatile, left ventricular assist device for intermediate and longer-term MCS. The system comprises the blood pump and a wearable controller and batteries providing a patient freedom and mobility. The HeartMate XVE received approval for BTT and Destination Therapy. It is approved in Europe and Canada.

The Paracorporeal Ventricular Assist Device

The PVAD is an external, pulsatile, ventricular assist device, approved for BTT, including home discharge, and post-cardiotomy myocardial recovery (post-cardiotomy) and provides left, right and biventricular MCS. The PVAD is a paracorporeal device. The paracorporeal nature of the PVAD has various benefits, including shorter implantation times (approximately two hours) and the ability to use the device in smaller patients. The PVAD is approved in Europe and Canada.

The Implantable Ventricular Assist Device

The IVAD is an implantable, pulsatile, ventricular assist device, approved for BTT, including home discharge, and post-cardiotomy myocardial recovery and provides left, right or biventricular MCS. The IVAD maintains the same blood flow path, valves and blood pumping mechanism as the PVAD, but has an outer housing made of a titanium alloy that makes it suitable for implantation. The IVAD is approved in Europe and Canada.

The CentriMag

The CentriMag is manufactured by Levitronix and is based on their magnetically levitated bearingless motor technology. The company entered into a distribution agreement with Levitronix to distribute the CentriMag in the U.S. The CentriMag is 510(k) cleared by the FDA for use up to six hours in patients requiring short-term extracorporeal circulatory support during cardiac surgery. SWOT Analysis

SWOT, which stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats, is an analytical framework that identifies the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable for a company.

Enhanced SWOT Analysis

Enhanced SWOT is a 3×3 grid that arranges strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats into one scheme:

  • How to use the strengths to take advantage of the opportunities?
  • How to use the strengths to reduce likelihood and impact of the threats?
  • How to overcome the weaknesses that obstruct taking advantage of the opportunities?
  • How to overcome the weaknesses that can make the threats a reality?

Upon answering these questions a company can develop a project plan to improve its business performance.

PESTEL Analysis

PESTEL (also termed as PESTLE) is an ideal tool to strategically analyze what influence different outside factors – political, economic, sociocultural, technological, environmental and legal – exert on a business to later chart its long term targets.

Being part of the external analysis when carrying out a strategic assessment or performing a market study, PESTEL gives an overview of diverse macro-environmental factors that any company should thoughtfully consider. By perceiving these outside environments, businesses can maximally benefit from the opportunities while minimizing the threats to the organization.

Key Factors Examined by PESTEL Analysis:

  • Political – What opportunities and pressures are brought by political bodies and what is the degree of public regulations’ impact on the business?
  • Economic – What economic policies, trends and structures are expected to affect the organization, what is this influence’s degree?
  • Sociological – What cultural and societal aspects will work upon the demand for the business’s products and operations?
  • Technological – What impact do the technological aspects, innovations, incentives and barriers have on the organization?
  • Environmental – What environmental and ecological facets, both locally and farther afield, are likely to predetermine the business?
  • Legal – What laws and legislation will exert influence on the style the business is carried out?

IFE, EFE, IE Matrices

The Internal Factor Evaluation matrix (IFE matrix) is a strategic management tool helping audit or evaluate major weaknesses and strengths in a business’s functional areas. In addition, IFE matrix serves as a basis for identifying and assessing relationships amongst those areas. The IFE matrix is utilised in strategy formulation.

The External Factor Evaluation matrix (EFE matrix) is a tool of strategic management that is typically utilised to assess current market conditions. It is an ideal instrument for visualising and prioritising the threats and opportunities a firm is facing.

The essential difference between the above mentioned matrices lies in the type of factors incorporated in the model; whilst the latter is engaged in internal factors, the former deals exceptionally with external factors – those exposed to social, political, economic, legal, etc. external forces.

Being a continuation of the EFE matrix and IFE matrix models, the Internal External matrix (IE matrix) rests upon an investigation of external and internal business factors integrated into one suggestive model.

Porter Five Forces Analysis

The Porter’s five forces analysis studies the industry of operation and helps the company find new sources of competitive advantage. The analysis surveys an industry through five major questions:

  1. What composes a threat of substitute products and services?
  2. Is there a threat of new competitors entering the market?
  3. What is the intensity of competitive rivalry?
  4. How big is the bargaining power of buyers?
  5. How significant is the bargaining power of suppliers?

VRIO Analysis

VRIO stands for Value, Rarity, Imitability, Organization. This analysis helps to evaluate all company’s resources and capabilities and bring them together into one aggregate table that includes:

  • Tangible resources
    • Financial
    • Physical
    • Technological
    • Organizational
  • Intangible resources
    • Human
    • Innovation and Creativity
    • Reputation
  • Organizational capabilities

The result of the analysis gives a clear picture of company’s competitive and economic implications, answering the questions if the resources mentioned above are:

  • Valuable?
  • Rare?
  • Costly to imitate?
  • Organized properly?
