The company operates in 12 markets outside the United Kingdom, in Europe, Asia and North America. Its international businesses serve approximately 28 million customers. The company has 27 distribution centres, 7 of which handle its non-food and clothing ranges. It operates 2,282 stores in the United Kingdom.
The companys range of non-food is offered in Extra stores and Homeplus, including electricals, home entertainment, clothing, health and beauty, stationery, cookshop and soft furnishings, and seasonal goods such as barbecues and garden furniture in the summer. Some of its stores also have opticians and approximately 240 have pharmacies.
In 2006, the company launched Tesco Direct, a new online and catalogue non-food offer, with approximately 11,000 products available online. Customers also have a delivery to store option so they can pick up their order from their local store.
In September 2009, Tesco PLC put the Zhoupu store into operation in Shanghai, which is the first store it established after it turned itself into a locally-incorporated company in Shanghai.
In October 2009, Tesco PLC has launched an online fashion store offering Tesco and branded clothing. All of Tesco's clothing brands, including F&F and Cherokee would be available, along with online items from these and other new Tesco clothing brands like casual wear brand Henry J Finn and urban menswear brand Method.
On October 21, 2009, Tesco PLC and Microsoft Corporation announced a collaboration to launch the next generation of home video viewing. Tesco customers in the United Kingdom who purchase certain home video titles can download 'digital copy' versions of movies to their Windows-based or Apple Macintosh computers in a 'virtual DVD' experience.
In November 2009, Tesco PLC has signed an agreement to set up the first in a planned series of joint ventures to develop shopping malls in China. 50% of the joint venture would be owned by a syndicate of Asian investors including HSBC Nan Fung China Real Estate Fund, Singapore's Metro Holdings Ltd. and Hong Kong's Nan Fung Group.
