About NVIDIA Corporation

NVIDIA Corporation provides visual computing technologies designed to generate interactive graphics on consumer and professional computing devices. The company serves the entertainment and consumer market with its GeForce graphics products, the professional design and visualization market with its Quadro graphics products, the computing market with its Tesla computing solutions products, and the handheld computing market with its Tegra computer-on-a-chip products.

The company operates in four segments: Graphic Processing Unit (GPU), Professional Solutions Business (PSB), Media and Communications Processor (MCP), and Consumer Products Business (CPB).

GPU Business

The GPU business comprises primarily of its GeForce products that support desktop and notebook PCs, plus memory products. The GPU business focuses on Microsoft Windows and Apple PC platforms. GeForce GPUs power PCs made by or distributed by most PC OEMs in the world for desktop PCs, notebook PCs, and PCs loaded with Windows Media Center and other media extenders, such as the Apple TV.

During 2010, the company introduced CUDA GPU architecture, codenamed Fermi. It also launched a development environment for massively parallel computing. In addition, the company launched Optimus technology, a combination of software and hardware innovations for notebooks, which turns on and off the GPU based on application needs without any user intervention.

Professional Solutions Business

The PSB comprises Quadro professional workstation products and other professional graphics products, including its Tesla computing products. The Quadro family consists of the Quadro Plex Visual Computing System, or VCS, Quadro FX, Quadro CX and the Quadro Night Vision Systems, or NVS, professional workstation processors. Quadro products are recognized by many as the standard for professional graphics solutions needed to solve many of the world’s most complex visual computing challenges in the manufacturing, entertainment, medical, science, and aerospace industries.

The company launched RealityServer, a combination of GPU hardware and software with the ability to stream interactive, photorealistic 3D applications to any web- connected PC, laptop, netbook or smart phone. It also launched two significant enhancements to Quadro product line-up: Quadro Plex SVS, a scalable visual computing platform for professionals who interact with 3D models and analyze large volumes of data, and the OptiX ray tracing engine, part of a suite of application acceleration engines for software developers. This suite also includes engines for managing 3D data and scenes, scaling performance across multiple GPUs and real-time modeling of hyper-realistic physical and environmental effects.
MCP Business

The MCP business comprises nForce core logic and GeForce mGPU products. The company’s nForce and GeForce mGPU families of products address the core logic market. Core logic is the computer’s ‘central nervous system,’ controlling and directing high speed data between the central processing unit, or CPU, the GPU, storage, and networks. The company's ION mGPU products are focused on transforming mainstream Intel PCs into a premium experience.

In 2009, the company launched the GeForce 9400M mGPU along with Apple Inc., or Apple, for their new lineup of Mac notebooks. The GeForce 9400M integrates three complex chips – the northbridge, the input-output network processor, and the GeForce GPU into a single chip and, as a result, significantly improves performance over Intel integrated graphics. The company also launched the GeForce 9400 and 9300 mGPUs for Intel desktop PCs. Additionally, the company announced the NVIDIA Ion Platform, which combines the GeForce 9400 GPU with the Intel Atom CPU.

Consumer Products Business (CPB)

The CPB comprises Tegra mobile products that support smartphones, smartbooks, tablets, personal media players, or PMPs, Internet television, automotive navigation, and other similar devices. CPB also includes license, royalty, other revenue and associated costs related to video game consoles and other digital consumer electronics devices.

SWOT Analysis

SWOT, which stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats, is an analytical framework that identifies the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable for a company.

Enhanced SWOT Analysis

Enhanced SWOT is a 3×3 grid that arranges strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats into one scheme:

  • How to use the strengths to take advantage of the opportunities?
  • How to use the strengths to reduce likelihood and impact of the threats?
  • How to overcome the weaknesses that obstruct taking advantage of the opportunities?
  • How to overcome the weaknesses that can make the threats a reality?

Upon answering these questions a company can develop a project plan to improve its business performance.

PESTEL Analysis

PESTEL (also termed as PESTLE) is an ideal tool to strategically analyze what influence different outside factors – political, economic, sociocultural, technological, environmental and legal – exert on a business to later chart its long term targets.

Being part of the external analysis when carrying out a strategic assessment or performing a market study, PESTEL gives an overview of diverse macro-environmental factors that any company should thoughtfully consider. By perceiving these outside environments, businesses can maximally benefit from the opportunities while minimizing the threats to the organization.

Key Factors Examined by PESTEL Analysis:

  • Political – What opportunities and pressures are brought by political bodies and what is the degree of public regulations’ impact on the business?
  • Economic – What economic policies, trends and structures are expected to affect the organization, what is this influence’s degree?
  • Sociological – What cultural and societal aspects will work upon the demand for the business’s products and operations?
  • Technological – What impact do the technological aspects, innovations, incentives and barriers have on the organization?
  • Environmental – What environmental and ecological facets, both locally and farther afield, are likely to predetermine the business?
  • Legal – What laws and legislation will exert influence on the style the business is carried out?

IFE, EFE, IE Matrices

The Internal Factor Evaluation matrix (IFE matrix) is a strategic management tool helping audit or evaluate major weaknesses and strengths in a business’s functional areas. In addition, IFE matrix serves as a basis for identifying and assessing relationships amongst those areas. The IFE matrix is utilised in strategy formulation.

The External Factor Evaluation matrix (EFE matrix) is a tool of strategic management that is typically utilised to assess current market conditions. It is an ideal instrument for visualising and prioritising the threats and opportunities a firm is facing.

The essential difference between the above mentioned matrices lies in the type of factors incorporated in the model; whilst the latter is engaged in internal factors, the former deals exceptionally with external factors – those exposed to social, political, economic, legal, etc. external forces.

Being a continuation of the EFE matrix and IFE matrix models, the Internal External matrix (IE matrix) rests upon an investigation of external and internal business factors integrated into one suggestive model.

Porter Five Forces Analysis

The Porter’s five forces analysis studies the industry of operation and helps the company find new sources of competitive advantage. The analysis surveys an industry through five major questions:

  1. What composes a threat of substitute products and services?
  2. Is there a threat of new competitors entering the market?
  3. What is the intensity of competitive rivalry?
  4. How big is the bargaining power of buyers?
  5. How significant is the bargaining power of suppliers?

VRIO Analysis

VRIO stands for Value, Rarity, Imitability, Organization. This analysis helps to evaluate all company’s resources and capabilities and bring them together into one aggregate table that includes:

  • Tangible resources
    • Financial
    • Physical
    • Technological
    • Organizational
  • Intangible resources
    • Human
    • Innovation and Creativity
    • Reputation
  • Organizational capabilities

The result of the analysis gives a clear picture of company’s competitive and economic implications, answering the questions if the resources mentioned above are:

  • Valuable?
  • Rare?
  • Costly to imitate?
