A Giant Magnetoresistive Current Sensor, or GMR Current Sensor, is a magnetic sensing device that measures electric current through the giant magnetoresistance effect. When current flows through a conductor, PCB trace, or busbar, it generates a magnetic field related to the magnitude and direction of the current. The GMR sensing structure, typically consisting of alternating ferromagnetic and non-magnetic conductive layers, changes its electrical resistance in response to the applied magnetic field. A Wheatstone bridge, amplifier, and signal-conditioning circuit then convert this resistance change into an analog or digital output corresponding to the measured current.

Giant magnetoresistive current sensors use the high sensitivity of GMR materials to weak magnetic-field variations to provide non-contact measurement of DC, AC, and pulsed currents. Their key advantages include low insertion loss, fast response, compact size, convenient electrical isolation, and compatibility with a wide measurement range. These characteristics help address the heat generation and power loss associated with shunt-resistor solutions, the relatively large size of conventional magnetic sensing architectures, and the insufficient dynamic response of traditional current sensors in high-frequency power systems. As electric vehicles move toward higher-voltage architectures, energy storage capacity expands, industrial equipment becomes more intelligent, data-center power density increases, and silicon carbide and gallium nitride power devices gain wider adoption, demand for high-bandwidth, high-accuracy, low-power, and miniaturized current sensing will continue to strengthen, creating new opportunities for coreless, external-busbar, and current-over-PCB-trace GMR sensor designs. Although GMR current sensing continues to face competition from Hall-effect and TMR technologies, and the number of commercial products and suppliers remains relatively limited, its differentiated value in high-resolution low-current measurement, rapid overcurrent protection, and compact high-current sensing is increasingly evident. Continued improvements in magnetic materials, temperature compensation, stray-field rejection, and packaging integration are expected to support the development of a more stable specialized market across automotive electronics, renewable energy equipment, industrial drives, and high-density power systems.
