Sputtering targets and evaporation materials are source materials used in physical vapor deposition processes to form metallic, alloy, ceramic, compound, and organic functional thin films. During sputtering, a solid target is bombarded by energetic plasma ions in a vacuum chamber, causing atoms to be ejected from the target surface and deposited onto wafers, glass, metals, polymers, or other substrates. Major target configurations include planar, rotary, circular, ring-shaped, and bonded targets. Evaporation materials are vaporized or sublimed through resistance heating, induction heating, or electron-beam heating and are normally supplied as granules, pellets, slugs, tablets, wires, rods, powders, or customized shapes.

Material systems include high-purity aluminum, copper, titanium, tantalum, tungsten, molybdenum, silver, gold, other pure metals, metal alloys, ITO, IGZO, AZO, oxides, nitrides, fluorides, chalcogenides, and organic evaporation materials for OLED, photovoltaic, and optoelectronic devices. End-use markets include semiconductors and advanced packaging, flat-panel displays and OLED, photovoltaics, optical devices, data storage, architectural and automotive glass, tooling, and decorative coatings. PVD equipment, copper backing plates, steel rotary tubes, process gases, evaporation boats and crucibles, ALD and CVD precursors, conductive pastes, and separately traded target scrap are excluded.
Global shipments of sputtering targets and evaporation materials were approximately 40,000 metric tonnes in 2025, with a weighted FOB-equivalent price of approximately USD 175,000 per metric tonne and gross margins of approximately 18% to 30%.

The global sputtering target and evaporation material market is shifting from conventional display, optical, and industrial coating demand toward a diversified growth structure driven by advanced semiconductors, artificial intelligence computing, advanced memory, advanced packaging, high-end OLED, and high-efficiency photovoltaics. Advanced logic, high-bandwidth memory, power semiconductors, and wafer-level packaging require a growing number of copper, tantalum, titanium, cobalt, tungsten, ruthenium, and complex-alloy films. These applications impose increasingly stringent requirements on purity, grain structure, crystallographic texture, gas content, and particle control. Rising OLED penetration is supporting demand for high-purity organic emitting, transport, and injection materials, while photovoltaic, low-emissivity glass, and automotive smart-glass applications are expanding demand for large planar and rotary targets.

The principal risks include raw-material price volatility, technology substitution, and lengthy customer qualification cycles. Price movements in indium, tantalum, cobalt, ruthenium, iridium, silver, and gold can materially alter reported revenue and gross margins, while higher precious-metal revenue does not necessarily translate into higher processing profit. Semiconductor and display customers generally require prolonged sample evaluation, tool qualification, yield verification, and reliability testing. Suppliers must also manage target cracking, nodules, particles, arcing, and film-uniformity risks. Selected PVD films may be replaced by ALD, CVD, electroplating, or electroless deposition, while higher target utilization and residual-target recycling can reduce virgin material consumption per unit of downstream output.

Downstream demand will increasingly emphasize higher purity, larger target dimensions, and closed-loop material management. Semiconductor customers will adopt more 5N-to-6N metals, low-alpha materials, and specialized alloys. Display, photovoltaic, and glass customers will increase the use of rotary targets, high-density ceramic targets, and targets for larger-generation production lines. OLED and precision optical applications will expand procurement of sublimation-grade organic compounds, oxides, and fluorides. Purchasing models will shift from individual material orders toward long-term qualification, equipment-process coordination, residual-target recycling, and precious-metal closed-loop programs.
