Photosensitive Polyimide for Semiconductor is a high-performance photopatternable dielectric and protective polymer material, usually supplied as a liquid polyimide precursor, photosensitive polyamic acid/polyamic ester system, PBO precursor, or dry-film photosensitive insulating material. It can be coated, exposed, developed, and cured to form patterned insulating, passivation, buffer, stress-relief, or redistribution dielectric layers in semiconductor wafers, advanced packaging, fan-out packaging, power devices, MEMS, CMOS image sensors, and related microelectronic devices. In 2025, global Photosensitive Polyimide for Semiconductor production reached approximately 528 MT.

The market is mainly driven by the rapid growth of advanced semiconductor packaging. As wafer-level packaging, fan-out packaging, 2.5D/3D integration, chiplets, redistribution layers and high-density interconnect structures become more widely used, semiconductor manufacturers need dielectric materials that can provide fine patterning, strong insulation, good adhesion to metal and dielectric surfaces, thermal stability, chemical resistance and stress buffering. Photosensitive polyimide and photosensitive PBO reduce process complexity because they can be directly patterned by exposure and development, avoiding some additional photoresist and etching steps. This makes PSPI particularly important in RDL formation, passivation openings, bump structures, under-bump dielectric layers and high-reliability package protection.

A second major driver is the transition toward thinner, more complex and more reliability-sensitive chips. In logic, memory, power semiconductors, CMOS image sensors and compound semiconductor devices, materials around pads, Cu wiring, solder bumps and passivation openings must withstand thermal cycling, moisture, mechanical stress, wafer thinning, bonding, reflow and long-term field operation. PSPI provides a combination of heat resistance, flexibility, dielectric performance and low moisture uptake that is difficult for many conventional photoresists or organic insulators to match. The development of low-temperature curable, alkaline-developable, NMP-free, dry-film and panel-level packaging compatible PSPI products further expands its use in next-generation packaging processes.
