Depending on the application, they may operate as direct-feed EAF power supplies, active power feeders, regenerative grid simulators, bidirectional programmable DC sources, battery or PV emulators, or magnet coil power supplies. Their core value lies in replacing conventional rigid power delivery with a controllable, regenerative, grid-friendly and application-specific power conversion platform.

From an industry-definition perspective, high-power flexible power supply systems should not be treated as a single globally standardized product category. In China, the term is commonly used for large power-electronic systems serving metallurgical electric furnaces and scientific research facilities, while international suppliers usually describe comparable solutions through application-specific names such as Direct Feed EAF power supply, Active Power Feeder, Q-One power feeder, regenerative grid simulator, bidirectional programmable DC power supply, or high-power power conversion system. This naming fragmentation makes keyword-only screening insufficient. A reliable global vendor pool must therefore combine standard names, application names, converter topologies, and regional-language search terms.

From a demand perspective, green steel, EVs, energy storage, renewable integration, hydrogen and fusion research are the main growth drivers. EAF-based steelmaking increases the need for grid-friendly, low-flicker and highly controllable power delivery, while EV and renewable-energy testing increases demand for bidirectional, regenerative and programmable AC/DC systems. This dual demand structure reduces dependence on any single end-market cycle and gives the sector a long-term growth profile, although annual revenue can still fluctuate sharply because many large EAF and fusion-related systems are recognized project by project.

From a technology-route perspective, competition in high-power flexible power supply systems is shifting from simple high-power output capability toward converter topology, dynamic control performance, regenerative efficiency, system scalability, and application-specific integration. In EAF applications, modular multilevel converters, IGBT-based direct-feed systems, high-current rectifiers, and active power feeder architectures are used to improve arc stability, reduce flicker and harmonics, and lower the impact of furnace operation on the grid. In testing applications, bidirectional DC platforms, regenerative AC grid simulators, four-quadrant power supplies, and SiC-enabled high-power-density systems are becoming more important as EV, battery, PCS, renewable inverter, and PHIL test requirements become more complex. In fusion and scientific research applications, the technical focus is different again, with suppliers emphasizing ultra-high current, low ripple, pulsed operation, precise waveform control, redundancy, and long-cycle engineering reliability. Therefore, the long-term competitive advantage of suppliers will not be determined only by rated power, but by the combined capability in power semiconductor selection, converter architecture, digital control algorithms, thermal management, protection design, grid interaction, and project-level system integration.
