Hypothyroidism is a thyroid disorder where thyroid gland secretes less triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) inadequate to meet peripheral tissue demand. To compensate the decline in T3 and T4 levels, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is produced in the pituitary gland.

These hormones regulate metabolism in the body and irregular secretion leads to disturbances in metabolism and energy storage. Further, normal functioning of brain, heart, muscles, and other organs can also be affected.

Auto-immune diseases, thyroidectomy, radiotherapy, radioiodine thyroid ablation typically cause hypothyroidism. The condition is common among women and old population.
