About Pan Pacific Petroleum NL

Pan Pacific Petroleum NL (the Company) is involved in petroleum exploration and production. The Company has a significant holding of exploration permits in the Carnarvon Basin in Western Australia, where it is also in venture with Origin Energy Ltd in the Tubridgi Gas Project. In addition to its Carnarvon Basin interests, Pan Pacific holds a substantial equity in exploration permit 38460 in the offshore Taranaki Basin, New Zealand, in which the Tui oil discovery was made early in 2003. Exploration during 2003 include drilling of oil discoveries in Taunton in the Carnarvon Basin and the Tui prospect in New Zealand.

Production

Tubridgi Project

The Tubridgi project comprises production of gas from the onshore Tubridgi field, plus the transportation and trading of gas produced from the offshore Griffin field. There are several recent discoveries in the southern end of the offshore Carnarvon Basin of which Vincent/Laverda are on track for first production in 2006.

Exploration

Pan Pacific’s activities are focussed on the Carnarvon Basin around Airlie Island in licences TL2 and TP7 and on its T ranaki Basin permit where oil was discovered in early 2003.

Carnarvon Basin

One of the discoveries made by the company during 2003 was the Taunton Field (Pan Pacific 10%). The Taunton-2 well was drilled in December 2002 and flowed at an average rate of 3000 barrels per day of light oil (49 degrees API). To confirm the discovery size and likely flow rates, the Taunton-3 appraisal well and sidetrack was drilled in 2003. Both Taunton-3 and the sidetrack 430m to the south encountered 5 meters of oil bearing sandstone and confirmed extension of the field to the northeast, lifting recoverable oil to approximately 5 million barrels. The oil reservoir at Taunton is around 1300 meter depth within the Airlie Bed.

The likely development will comprise a sub-sea completion with a 6 kilometer pipeline connecting Taunton to the TL2 production and storage facilities at Airlie Island, from which point oil can be transferred to tankers.

Mosman-1 was drilled to total depth of 2705m in September 2003. During the year 2002, drilling elsewhere in the Carnarvon Basin, of exploration wells in WA149P (Montgomery-1) and WA254P (Argos-1) filed to encounter hydrocarbons in commercial quantities. Hyssop-1 was drilled in TP7 in August 2003 encountering sub-commercial gas shows.

Taranaki Basin

The Company ’s second oil discovery during the year was in the Tui prospect (Pan Pacific 15%). Drilled in February 2003,the Tui well intersected 10 meter oil column (100%pay) in the Kapuni “F Sands ”at 3673 meters. In addition to the Tui field, several other prospects, with individual potential of 10 to 40 million barrels of oil, were identified from this year ’s 3D seismic.

Pukeko

The discovery of oil at Tui points to source of oil further west in the Kahurangi Trough. This upgrades the other prospects elsewhere in the permit -Pukeko, Hector and Tahuroa, but particularly Pukeko, because this prospect is located within the Kahurangi Trough in close proximity to the postulated source of oil. Pukeko is a large prospect at both F and C sands level in the Kapuni Formation some 70km southeast of Tui, with potential of 100+million barrels of oil.

Significant Events

On September 29, 2009, Pan Pacific Petroleum NL has agreed to acquire a 15% participating interest in the JPDA 06-103 production sharing contract. JPDA 06-103 is located to the east of the Laminaria, Corallina, Kakatua, Kuda Tasi and Elang discoveries/oil and gas fields and to the north of the Bayu-Undan gas condensate field in the northern Timor Sea. there participants in JPDA06-103 are Japan Energy E&P JPDA Pty. SWOT Analysis

SWOT, which stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats, is an analytical framework that identifies the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable for a company.

Enhanced SWOT Analysis

Enhanced SWOT is a 3×3 grid that arranges strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats into one scheme:

  • How to use the strengths to take advantage of the opportunities?
  • How to use the strengths to reduce likelihood and impact of the threats?
  • How to overcome the weaknesses that obstruct taking advantage of the opportunities?
  • How to overcome the weaknesses that can make the threats a reality?

Upon answering these questions a company can develop a project plan to improve its business performance.

PESTEL Analysis

PESTEL (also termed as PESTLE) is an ideal tool to strategically analyze what influence different outside factors – political, economic, sociocultural, technological, environmental and legal – exert on a business to later chart its long term targets.

Being part of the external analysis when carrying out a strategic assessment or performing a market study, PESTEL gives an overview of diverse macro-environmental factors that any company should thoughtfully consider. By perceiving these outside environments, businesses can maximally benefit from the opportunities while minimizing the threats to the organization.

Key Factors Examined by PESTEL Analysis:

  • Political – What opportunities and pressures are brought by political bodies and what is the degree of public regulations’ impact on the business?
  • Economic – What economic policies, trends and structures are expected to affect the organization, what is this influence’s degree?
  • Sociological – What cultural and societal aspects will work upon the demand for the business’s products and operations?
  • Technological – What impact do the technological aspects, innovations, incentives and barriers have on the organization?
  • Environmental – What environmental and ecological facets, both locally and farther afield, are likely to predetermine the business?
  • Legal – What laws and legislation will exert influence on the style the business is carried out?

IFE, EFE, IE Matrices

The Internal Factor Evaluation matrix (IFE matrix) is a strategic management tool helping audit or evaluate major weaknesses and strengths in a business’s functional areas. In addition, IFE matrix serves as a basis for identifying and assessing relationships amongst those areas. The IFE matrix is utilised in strategy formulation.

The External Factor Evaluation matrix (EFE matrix) is a tool of strategic management that is typically utilised to assess current market conditions. It is an ideal instrument for visualising and prioritising the threats and opportunities a firm is facing.

The essential difference between the above mentioned matrices lies in the type of factors incorporated in the model; whilst the latter is engaged in internal factors, the former deals exceptionally with external factors – those exposed to social, political, economic, legal, etc. external forces.

Being a continuation of the EFE matrix and IFE matrix models, the Internal External matrix (IE matrix) rests upon an investigation of external and internal business factors integrated into one suggestive model.

Porter Five Forces Analysis

The Porter’s five forces analysis studies the industry of operation and helps the company find new sources of competitive advantage. The analysis surveys an industry through five major questions:

  1. What composes a threat of substitute products and services?
  2. Is there a threat of new competitors entering the market?
  3. What is the intensity of competitive rivalry?
  4. How big is the bargaining power of buyers?
  5. How significant is the bargaining power of suppliers?

VRIO Analysis

VRIO stands for Value, Rarity, Imitability, Organization. This analysis helps to evaluate all company’s resources and capabilities and bring them together into one aggregate table that includes:

  • Tangible resources
    • Financial
    • Physical
    • Technological
    • Organizational
  • Intangible resources
    • Human
    • Innovation and Creativity
    • Reputation
  • Organizational capabilities

The result of the analysis gives a clear picture of company’s competitive and economic implications, answering the questions if the resources mentioned above are:

  • Valuable?
  • Rare?
  • Costly to imitate?
  • Organized properly?
