A transient electromagnetic (TEM) instrument is a geophysical exploration device designed to investigate subsurface geological structures and electrical properties based on the principles of the Transient Electromagnetic Method. Its operational principle involves transmitting pulsed currents into the subsurface?either from the ground surface or down a borehole?via a transmitting coil. When this current is rapidly switched off, induced eddy currents are generated within the subsurface medium, creating a secondary electromagnetic field that decays over time. By measuring these transient electromagnetic response signals using receiving coils or sensors, the instrument performs an inversion to determine the resistivity distribution of the subsurface medium at various depths, thereby identifying the location and scale of ore bodies, aquifers, faults, cavities, and other geological anomalies.

The upstream segment of the industry chain primarily comprises suppliers of high-performance transmitting coils, receiving coils, power amplifiers, digital signal processing (DSP) chips, precision sensors, PCBs, and electronic components; it also includes providers of precision machining services, aluminum alloy or composite material enclosures, and manufacturers of data acquisition equipment. The midstream segment consists of transient electromagnetic instrument manufacturers, who are responsible for integrating, calibrating, and debugging the transmitters, receivers, coils, signal acquisition modules, control systems, and analysis software to assemble complete systems suitable for geological, power utility, and engineering exploration applications. The downstream applications span a wide range of fields, including mineral resource exploration, groundwater surveys, safety detection in coal mines and tunnels, oil and gas exploration, geothermal exploration, engineering geology surveys, environmental monitoring, and airborne/marine electromagnetic surveys.

In 2025, the global sales volume of transient electromagnetic instruments is projected to reach 2,500 units, with a production capacity of approximately 72,000 units. The average selling price is estimated at $7.2 per unit, with an average gross profit margin ranging from 30% to 40%.
