Their primary function is to prevent joint back-driving, arm drop, or uncontrolled motion caused by gravity or inertia. The mainstream technical architecture is spring-applied, electrically released (power-off fail-safe) braking, which has become a standard configuration in industrial robots, collaborative robots, and emerging humanoid robots.
