Their operating principle is to acquire discrete points, feature points, or point clouds within a known or dynamically established coordinate system, and then perform error compensation, coordinate transformation, geometric fitting, and model comparison to determine dimensions, geometric tolerances, and assembly conditions. These systems emphasize portability, shop-floor adaptability, thermal stability, repeatability, calibration capability, and software performance. They are widely used for first-article inspection, in-process inspection, fixture and tooling adjustment, large-part assembly alignment, reverse engineering, and production quality control. In mainstream industry practice, they can be broadly grouped into articulated-arm systems, optical systems, large-volume tracking systems, and other portable coordinate measurement systems.

Quality control in manufacturing is shifting from ?bringing the part to the metrology room? to ?bringing measurement to the part.? Different technology routes are also not simple substitutes: articulated arms are better suited to small-to-medium volume near-field measurement, laser trackers and laser radar fit large-space and automated applications, while optical photogrammetry and dynamic tracking fit large parts, complex surfaces, and fast setup scenarios. Cyclical capital spending, supply-chain shifts, and lock-in around critical components and software ecosystems will continue to create periodic disruptions.

Three downstream demand trends are becoming increasingly clear. First, demand is moving from final inspection toward in-process and in-assembly inspection, with greater emphasis on rapid judgment, closed-loop correction, and less part movement.
