Water for Injection (WFI) System is a critical utility equipment category used in pharmaceutical and biotechnology manufacturing. It is designed to produce, store, distribute and control Water for Injection, a high-purity pharmaceutical water grade defined by major pharmacopeias, including the United States Pharmacopeia, European Pharmacopoeia, Japanese Pharmacopoeia and Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Typical Water for Injection System includes multi-effect distillers, vapor compression distillers, membrane-based WFI generation equipment, pure steam generators, WFI storage tanks, sanitary distribution loops, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, instrumentation and automation control systems.

Water for Injection is used in the pharmaceutical industry for the formulation of parenteral drugs, sterile preparations, biologics and other high-risk products. It is also used in equipment cleaning, final rinsing, clean utility supply and other manufacturing operations where strict control of microbial contamination and bacterial endotoxins is required. Because WFI may come into direct or indirect contact with final drug products, Water for Injection System must be designed, fabricated and validated to meet stringent GMP, pharmacopeial and hygienic engineering requirements.

The most widely used WFI method is distillation; however, this method is highly capital intensive and incurs high energy costs for heating the water. To address these barriers, many pharmacopeias have allowed or are evaluating alternative technologies, and in the United States and Japan, non-distillation methods such as reverse osmosis have long been accepted, provided that the required WFI quality can be consistently achieved. In Europe, the European Pharmacopoeia revised its WFI monograph in 2017, allowing WFI to be produced by reverse osmosis combined with appropriate additional technologies such as electro-deionization, ultrafiltration or nanofiltration. China has also updated its regulatory position. Under the 2025 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, WFI may be obtained from purified water by distillation or by a purification process equivalent to distillation, provided that the process complies with the relevant regulatory requirements and the final water quality meets the applicable specifications. As a result, the market for Water for Injection System is no longer limited to conventional thermal equipment. Membrane-based WFI generation equipment has become an increasingly important technology route, especially for projects focused on energy saving, lower carbon emissions, reduced utility consumption and modular construction.
