The global Lewis Acid Electrolyte Additives market size is predicted to grow from US$ 17.61 million in 2025 to US$ 70.12 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 19.2% from 2026 to 2032.

Lewis acid electrolyte additives are functional electrolyte additives with electron-pair accepting capability. They are introduced into liquid, gel or polymer electrolytes to coordinate with anions, fluoride species, oxide species, solvent molecules or interfacial by-products, thereby modifying salt dissociation, ion transport, solvation structure, SEI/CEI formation, interfacial impedance, thermal stability and high-voltage cycling performance. Typical chemistries include boron-based Lewis acids, borate esters, borane derivatives, aluminum-based Lewis acids and phosphorus-containing Lewis acid structures. In battery research, boron-based anion receptors such as tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane have been widely studied as electrolyte additives because the electron-deficient boron center can interact with anions or Lewis-basic species.

Based on our research, Lewis acid electrolyte additives are best understood as electrolyte interfacial chemistry and solvation-structure modifiers, rather than conventional bulk electrolyte additives. Their core value comes from the electron-pair accepting capability of the Lewis acid center, which allows them to interact with anions, fluoride species, oxide species, solvent molecules or interfacial by-products in the electrolyte. Through these interactions, they can influence salt dissociation, Li? transport, SEI/CEI formation, interfacial impedance and high-voltage stability. In this sense, Lewis acid additives act more like ?formulation amplifiers?: they are typically used at low dosage levels, but can have a disproportionate impact on cycling performance, especially in high-voltage cathodes, silicon anodes, lithium metal systems and high-temperature electrolyte environments. From a product-route perspective, boron-based Lewis acid additives represent the clearest and most technically established direction. Molecules such as tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane, borate esters and other boron-containing anion receptors use an electron-deficient boron center to coordinate with anions or Lewis-basic species, thereby modifying the ionic environment and interfacial reaction pathway. BF? complexes should be viewed as a related but somewhat different branch, with potential functions in solubility enhancement, fluoride capture and interface regulation. Aluminum- and phosphorus-containing Lewis acid additives also appear in research and patent literature, but their commercialization visibility is generally lower than that of boron-based systems. As a result, boron-centered Lewis acid chemistry is likely to remain the most important technical pathway in the near term. From the competitive landscape perspective, this market should not be analyzed simply by ranking electrolyte additive companies by revenue. Most Lewis acid additives are unlikely to be sold as transparent, high-volume commodity products under publicly disclosed product names. Instead, they are more likely to be embedded inside customized electrolyte formulations developed by electrolyte suppliers, battery manufacturers or specialty chemical companies. The key competitive capabilities are therefore not only molecular synthesis, but also battery-grade purity control, moisture and impurity management, formulation compatibility, electrochemical validation and the ability to co-develop additives with specific cathode, anode and electrolyte systems. Electrolyte leaders and specialty boron / fluorine chemistry suppliers are therefore better positioned than ordinary laboratory reagent distributors. From the demand perspective, Lewis acid electrolyte additives are unlikely to become a mainstream bulk additive category in the short term. Their opportunity lies in high-performance and problem-specific battery systems where conventional additive packages are insufficient. Key target applications include high-nickel and high-voltage cathodes, silicon-carbon anodes, lithium metal batteries, lithium?sulfur systems, lithium?oxygen systems, polymer electrolytes and special lithium-salt solubilization scenarios. In these applications, Lewis acid additives may help address persistent pain points such as unstable interphases, excessive impedance growth, fluoride-related side reactions, poor salt dissociation or difficult solubility of functional salts. Looking forward, Lewis acid electrolyte additives should be viewed as a small-scale but high-technical-leverage specialty segment within the broader electrolyte additive market. The market size will remain much smaller than mature additives such as VC, FEC, DTD or LiPO?F?, but the technology value could be meaningful in next-generation battery chemistries. Commercialization will depend on whether these additives can demonstrate stable performance benefits under practical cell conditions, acceptable cost, low impurity levels, long storage stability, gas-generation control and compatibility with existing electrolyte manufacturing processes. If validated in high-nickel fast-charging, silicon-anode or lithium-metal systems, the category could move from research and patent-driven development into early commercial adoption; if conventional additive combinations continue to meet performance and cost requirements, adoption may remain limited to niche formulations.
