A hydrogen-powered forklift is a type of forklift that uses a hydrogen fuel cell as its power source. The hydrogen fuel cell generates electrical energy through the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, which in turn drives the motor of the forklift. During this process, hydrogen undergoes an oxidation reaction at the anode, releasing electrons. These electrons travel through an external circuit to the cathode, where they react with oxygen in a reduction reaction to produce water. This type of forklift typically also comes equipped with a hydrogen storage system, a fuel cell stack, a motor, a controller, a battery management system, as well as working devices (such as forks) and counterweights. It combines the advantages of fuel cell technology, featuring zero or near-zero emissions, high energy conversion efficiency, and rapid hydrogen refueling. The price of this product is approximately US$30,000 to US$40,000 per unit.

Upstream, Hydrogen-powered Forklifts sit at the intersection of the forklift supply chain and the hydrogen fuel cell supply chain: hydrogen is produced through electrolysis or reforming, then purified, compressed, or liquefied, stored, transported, or generated on-site and delivered via on-site infrastructure such as tanks, compressors, refueling stations, and safety systems; simultaneously, fuel cell power modules consist of key components including membrane electrode assemblies with platinum group catalysts, bipolar plates, gaskets and seals, air and hydrogen supply hardware, humidification and thermal management, sensors and controllers, and high-pressure hydrogen cylinders and valves; while forklift OEMs or integrators combine the fuel cell modules with the forklift's electric drive system, power electronics, and battery or capacitor buffers, and complete verification and certification. Downstream users, such as high-utilization users like distribution centers, cold storage facilities, and manufacturing plants, deploy these forklifts. In these locations, operators can refuel in just a few minutes and operate multiple shifts. Continuous hydrogen supply contracts or on-site production, fleet management and safety training, preventative maintenance of trucks and fuel cell systems, and spare parts and service networks all support these forklifts. When forklifts are scrapped, they are either resold or scrapped, while fuel cell stacks and high-pressure storage tanks are processed according to prescribed inspection, refurbishment, and metal and component recycling procedures.

Hydrogen-powered forklifts represent a strategic niche within the broader material handling equipment market, driven primarily by high-utilization warehouse environments that value fast refueling, stable power output, and reduced downtime compared with conventional lead-acid battery systems. Their adoption is strongest in large distribution centers, cold storage facilities, and multi-shift operations where productivity gains can offset higher upfront system and hydrogen infrastructure costs. Policy incentives supporting decarbonization and the development of green hydrogen ecosystems further enhance long-term potential. However, widespread penetration remains constrained by fueling infrastructure availability, hydrogen supply economics, and competition from increasingly efficient lithium-ion battery forklifts.
