Cryogen-free dry dilution refrigerators are ultra-low-temperature cooling systems that do not require a continuous external supply of liquid helium. They use a pulse-tube cryocooler for precooling and exploit the endothermic mixing process of helium-3 and helium-4 to achieve millikelvin temperatures. A typical system consists of a pulse-tube cold head, vacuum chamber, radiation shields, helium-3/helium-4 circulation loop, mixing chamber, heat exchangers, condensation lines, gas-handling system, control electronics and an experimental sample platform. Commercial systems commonly reach base temperatures below 10 mK, while selected high-performance platforms can approach approximately 5 mK and provide continuous cooling power at the mixing-chamber stage. Compared with traditional wet dilution refrigerators, dry systems eliminate routine liquid-helium filling, offer greater automation and support extended unattended operation. Principal applications include superconducting quantum computing, quantum-device characterization, condensed-matter physics, low-temperature materials research, quantum sensing, astrophysical detectors and fundamental physics experiments.

The upstream segment includes helium-3 and high-purity helium-4, pulse-tube cryocoolers, vacuum pumps, compressors, cryogenic heat exchangers, low-temperature valves, stainless steel and high-purity copper, superconducting wiring, radio-frequency coaxial cables, cryogenic filters, temperature sensors, vacuum gauges, magnetic-shielding materials and control electronics. Helium-3 availability, low-vibration pulse-tube technology, oxygen-free copper processing and cryogenic instrumentation are particularly important to system performance.

Midstream participants include dilution-refrigerator manufacturers and quantum-cryogenic system integrators. Their activities cover thermodynamic design, vacuum-vessel fabrication, helium-circulation integration, low-temperature-stage machining, wiring and filtering, control-software development, system assembly, temperature calibration and reliability testing. Manufacturers may also integrate superconducting magnets, optical access, radio-frequency lines, cryogenic amplifiers, magnetic shielding, rapid sample-exchange modules and customized quantum-processor wiring. As quantum systems scale, suppliers are increasingly moving from standalone refrigerator sales toward modular cryogenic platforms and large-scale quantum infrastructure.

Downstream customers include quantum-computing companies, universities and national laboratories, semiconductor and quantum-chip research institutes, condensed-matter laboratories, aerospace and defense research organizations, and quantum-sensing companies. The delivery process normally covers system design, technical specification, manufacturing, factory acceptance, on-site installation, cooldown commissioning and long-term technical support.
