Typical radioisotopes include Nickel-63, Tritium, and Promethium-147, while semiconductor materials may include silicon, silicon carbide (SiC), gallium nitride (GaN), diamond, or other radiation-resistant materials. The supply chain begins upstream with radioisotope production through nuclear reactors, isotope enrichment facilities, and radioisotope processing companies, alongside semiconductor material suppliers providing wafers and radiation-hardened semiconductor substrates. Midstream activities involve betavoltaic cell design, semiconductor fabrication, isotope encapsulation, microbattery assembly, radiation shielding integration, and quality certification. Downstream, the cells are incorporated into ultra-long-life power systems for aerospace, defense, medical implants, remote sensors, industrial monitoring devices, Internet of Things (IoT) nodes, deep-space exploration equipment, underwater systems, and critical infrastructure monitoring applications where battery replacement is difficult or impossible. The key value proposition of betavoltaic cells is their ability to provide microwatt-to-milliwatt power continuously for 10?50 years or more without recharging or maintenance.
