Battery steel cases are precision steel or nickel-plated steel casings used for encapsulating lithium-ion battery cells, and are an important component of battery structure. This product primarily protects the internal electrode assembly, separator, and electrolyte of the cell, and performs functions such as sealing, impact resistance, dimensional support, thermal diffusion, safe pressure relief, and adaptation for automated assembly. The lithium battery steel case is not the battery cell itself, nor does it include other structural components such as cover plates, terminals, insulation components, or the PACK housing.

Based on product form, battery steel cases can be divided into square steel cases, large cylindrical steel cases, small cylindrical steel cases, and button steel cases. Large cylindrical steel cases are mainly used in 46 series, 4680, and 4695 large cylindrical power batteries; small cylindrical steel cases are mainly used in 18, 21, 26, and 32 series cylindrical batteries, covering power tools, consumer electronics, small power batteries, and some energy storage applications; button steel cases are mainly used in TWS (True Wireless Stereo), smart wearables, and micro batteries. Compared to aluminum and aluminum-plastic composite shells, steel shells offer higher mechanical strength, dimensional consistency, and impact resistance, but require higher standards for deep drawing, wall thickness control, nickel plating quality, thermal diffusion performance, and cleanliness. Global shipments of battery steel cases are projected to reach approximately 10 billion units by 2025, with an average unit price of approximately US$0.038 and a gross profit margin of approximately 13%.

With the continued expansion of cylindrical lithium batteries in power batteries, power tools, smart mobility, robotics, energy storage, and consumer electronics, lithium battery steel cases, as a key structural component for cell packaging, are upgrading from ordinary metal stamping parts to core battery components requiring high precision, high consistency, and high safety. Steel cases not only provide mechanical protection and sealing support but also directly affect cell dimensional consistency, thermal diffusion capabilities, safe pressure relief, automated assembly efficiency, and battery manufacturing yield. Especially with the accelerated development of large cylindrical battery technologies such as the 4680 and 46 series, steel cases place higher demands on material strength, wall thickness consistency, deep drawing forming, nickel plating quality, and surface cleanliness.

From an industry trend perspective, large and small cylindrical steel cases will become the main growth drivers in the lithium battery steel case market. Driven by the development of new energy vehicles and high-energy-density power batteries, the demand for large cylindrical steel shells has significantly increased, requiring high-precision, low-cost shells compatible with higher battery heights. Small cylindrical steel shells, supported by demand from power tools, smart mobility, robots, low-altitude aircraft, power banks, and some consumer electronics, are maintaining stable growth. Meanwhile, the development of TWS earphones, smart rings, smartwatches, and micro-wearable devices is also driving the upgrading of button-type and micro-steel shells towards thinner walls, miniaturization, and higher reliability.

The core of industry competition will shift from simple capacity expansion to precision manufacturing capabilities and customer certification capabilities. Battery steel shells have high requirements for dimensional tolerances, roundness, wall thickness, bottom forming, coating uniformity, corrosion resistance, and cleanliness. Furthermore, downstream battery customer certification cycles are lengthy, requiring suppliers to possess mold development, deep drawing forming, surface treatment, automated testing, and stable batch delivery capabilities.
