At present, representative companies include EVE, BAK Power Battery, Loding Energy, etc. Soft-pack batteries have become one of the ideal choices for batteries for electric aircraft such as industrial electric drones due to their lightweight and flexible design. In the future, as the energy density and cycle life of soft-pack batteries are further improved, they will be able to better meet the high requirements of electric aircraft for battery performance. In addition, based on the particularity of air traffic properties, eVTOL has extremely stringent requirements for aviation-grade safety, frequent and fast charging capabilities, and power performance in complex environments. This poses a great challenge to power battery companies in the research and development of next-generation aviation-grade batteries for eVTOL.Drive:As an emerging branch of the aviation industry, eVTOL is becoming increasingly fertile for the development of China's eVTOL industry based on its long-term accumulation in cost, battery technology, and some supply chain support. Regarding the development of eVTOL, some analysts pointed out that among the various elements such as batteries, motors, manufacturing, communications, and intelligent driving systems, the power required for a car to take off vertically is 10 to 15 times that of driving on the ground, and battery performance is a key factor restricting the development of eVTOL. Industry experts said that if flying cars want to be commercialized, they first need very powerful power battery support.Application:The first application scenario is eVTOL. In 2030, the global market size of eVTOL could reach hundreds of billions of dollars, of which batteries account for about 20%-30%. However, it is unlikely to form a scale effect in a short period of time. eVTOL still needs to solve problems such as airspace, power, safety, noise, and cost. It is not expected to be put into commercial use on a large scale in the short term. The second application scenario is flying cars. According to incomplete statistics, domestic and foreign automakers such as GM, Porsche, Xiaopeng, and GAC, and technology companies such as Intel and Uber are all planning flying cars. As of 2021, more than 200 companies or institutions around the world are developing flying car products, with about 420 models. Among them, Xiaopeng Huitian Flying Car Traveler X2, owned by Xiaopeng Motors-W (09868.HK), completed its first overseas public flight in Dubai in 2022. The company also announced that flying cars will be mass-produced as early as 2024, with an estimated price of about one million yuan. The third application scenario can be expected to be civil airliners. At least 1000Wh/kg of energy density is required to drive a large aircraft in cruising state. The batteries currently on the market are between 200-260Wh/kg. According to the growth rate of energy density in the industry in the past, it will take many years of exploration to develop 800-1000Wh/kg secondary batteries (i.e. batteries that can be used through charge and discharge cycles). It may be applied to civil aviation passenger aircraft in a hybrid mode at the beginning. When a relatively large power is required for takeoff or landing, batteries can be used in addition to aviation fuel to improve power performance; when a large power is not required during the level flight and cruising phase, oil can be used, which greatly improves fuel economy. As for pure electrification, it is estimated that it is not realistic for long-range routes or intercontinental routes, but some short-distance feeder flights may be used in the future. Of course, this is based on the premise that battery technology has been greatly improved and can solve energy density and endurance problems.
