All-optical switching equipment (OCS) is a device that controls the path of optical signals in an optical communication network entirely through light, without converting them into electrical signals. They utilize mechanisms such as nonlinear optical effects, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), or photonic crystals to guide optical signals from one optical fiber or channel to another, thereby achieving ultra-high-speed data routing. Because all-optical switches do not require photoelectric (O-E) and electro-optical (E-O) conversion, they significantly reduce latency and power consumption, making them ideal for high-speed, high-capacity networks such as data centers and future 6G infrastructure. In 2025, OCS switch sales reached approximately 29,162 units (including those produced and used by companies like Google), with an average price of approximately $26,866 per unit and a capacity utilization rate of approximately 71.30%. Upstream companies primarily come from the optical device and materials sector, including suppliers of optical switch chips and MEMS devices, PLCs and silicon photonics devices, optical fibers and connectors, precision machinery and packaging materials, and control boards and embedded software modules. Downstream companies are mainly concentrated in data center network equipment integration, cloud services and hyperscale data center operation, and telecommunications operator backbone and metropolitan area network construction. The overall industry gross profit margin is approximately 45% to 65%. As AI computing clusters rapidly scale up, east-west traffic exhibits high bursts and high concentrations, highlighting the bottlenecks of traditional electrical switches in power consumption and port density. This is accelerating the application of OCS in rack-level and data center-level network architectures. However, in the medium to long term, with the maturation of silicon photonics integration, automated optical layer scheduling software, and standard interfaces, the deployment complexity and cost of OCS will continue to decrease.
