Active Battery Balancers are electronic battery management components used in multi-cell battery packs to actively transfer energy from higher-voltage or higher-state-of-charge cells to lower-voltage cells, thereby equalizing cell voltages, improving usable battery capacity, extending battery life, enhancing safety, and increasing charging/discharging efficiency. Unlike passive balancing systems that dissipate excess energy as heat through resistors, active battery balancers use inductors, transformers, capacitors, DC-DC converters, or switched energy-transfer circuits to redistribute energy between cells with minimal losses. They are widely used in electric vehicles (EVs), energy storage systems (ESS), industrial batteries, telecommunications backup power, aerospace systems, and high-performance consumer electronics. The supply chain begins upstream with semiconductor manufacturers supplying microcontrollers, battery management ICs, MOSFETs, power management chips, gate drivers, analog front-end ICs, voltage/current sensing devices, and passive components such as capacitors, inductors, transformers, resistors, and PCBs. Midstream manufacturers design and produce active balancing modules, battery management systems (BMS), balancing ICs, and integrated battery control units, often combining hardware, firmware, and communication interfaces such as CAN, LIN, RS485, and Ethernet. Downstream customers include battery pack manufacturers, EV OEMs, energy storage integrators, industrial equipment suppliers, telecom infrastructure providers, aerospace and defense contractors, and renewable energy system developers, who integrate active battery balancers into lithium-ion, solid-state, LFP, NMC, sodium-ion, and other advanced battery systems to improve overall battery performance and reliability.
