Thermodulation catheters are invasive pulmonary artery catheters designed by Jeremy Swan and William Ganz for continuous or intermittent hemodynamic monitoring. Inserted via the internal jugular or femoral vein, the catheter floats through the right atrium and right ventricle into the pulmonary artery. It features a floating balloon port, a multi-lumen design, and thermodulation cardiac output measurement capabilities. Clinically, it can be used to measure pulmonary artery pressure (PAP), cardiac output (CO), right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF), right ventricular end-diastolic volume (RVEDV), and mixed venous oxygen saturation (SvO?), and is widely used in intensive care, cardiac surgery, and clinical monitoring and treatment guidance for patients with complex cardiovascular diseases. Since its initial introduction in the 1970s, thermodilution catheters have undergone several generations of technological iterations: the first generation used intermittent thermodilution to measure cardiac output; the second generation introduced a hot wire to achieve continuous thermodilution; and the third generation combined continuous thermodilution with pulse wave analysis to provide richer hemodynamic data. Each generation of products can expand measurement parameters, such as continuously mixed venous oxygen saturation, right ventricular ejection fraction, end-diastolic volume, and right ventricular pressure, providing crucial clinical evidence for cardiopulmonary function assessment, fluid management, and treatment decisions in critically ill patients. Thermodilution catheters have long been considered high-value medical consumables in clinical monitoring, maintaining a core monitoring position in ICUs, operating rooms, and specialized interventional units.
