Genetically engineered universal nucleases are a class of enzymes that can cut phosphodiester bonds in DNA or RNA molecules. The cutting of these enzymes does not depend on a specific nucleotide sequence, but can cut at any position of the molecular chain. It can degrade all forms of DNA and RNA, including single-stranded, double-stranded, linear, circular, natural and denatured nucleic acids. Genetically engineered universal nucleases do not recognize and bind to specific DNA sequences, but randomly cut the target molecules.
