Due to particle size heterogeneity, centrifugation precipitates at different rates, spontaneously producing a homogenized and isotonic gradient with a density between 1.0 and 1.3 g/mL. Most of the biological particles with a sedimentation coefficient > 60S can be separated by Percoll.
