A Strontium-90 (Sr-90) radioactive source is a beta-emitting radiation source that utilizes the radioisotope Strontium-90 as its active material. Sr-90 is a major fission product generated during nuclear reactor operations and nuclear fuel reprocessing, with a half-life of approximately 28.8 years. During radioactive decay, Sr-90 emits high-energy beta particles and subsequently transforms into Yttrium-90 (Y-90), which also emits beta radiation. Owing to its long service life, stable radiation output, and high specific activity, Sr-90 sources are widely used in thickness gauges, density gauges, static eliminators, calibration instruments, medical therapy equipment, and radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs). For safety reasons, most commercial Sr-90 products are encapsulated in stainless steel, titanium, or other specialized materials to form sealed radioactive sources that prevent radioactive leakage and environmental contamination. The Sr-90 radioactive source industry chain is a typical nuclear fuel cycle derivative industry chain. The upstream mainly includes nuclear reactor operation, spent fuel reprocessing, and radioisotope extraction. Sr-90 is not naturally occurring but is produced during the fission of uranium-235 or plutonium-239; therefore, its source primarily depends on nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities. After Sr-90 is isolated from spent fuel, it needs to undergo purification, enrichment, activity determination, and chemical stabilization. The midstream mainly includes radioactive source design and manufacturing, sealing and packaging, activity calibration, safety certification, and transportation permit management. Due to the involvement of IAEA and national nuclear regulatory requirements, the manufacturing threshold is extremely high, and only a few countries worldwide have the capacity for large-scale production. The downstream market mainly includes industrial online measurement equipment, nuclear instrument calibration equipment, medical radiation therapy equipment, scientific research experimental devices, and radioisotope batteries (RTGs). Among these, industrial thickness gauges and radiation calibration equipment are currently the most mature application markets, while the decommissioning of nuclear power plants and the development of deep space energy systems are driving the growth in demand for new RTGs. The entire industry chain is characterized by high resource concentration, strict regulation, high technological barriers, and relatively limited market size.
