Strontium-90 industrial radioactive sources refer to sealed industrial radioactive sources that use the radioactive isotope strontium-90 (Sr-90) and its decay product yttrium-90 (Y-90) as radiation source materials, encapsulated in a metal container using a special sealing process. Sr-90 is a pure beta-emitting nuclide with a half-life of approximately 28.8 years, characterized by stable radiation output, long service life, no need for external power supply, and low maintenance costs. These radioactive sources are widely used in industrial thickness measurement, density measurement, level detection, static electricity elimination, industrial calibration, and process control systems, and are crucial core components of industrial nuclear instruments and online monitoring equipment. The Strontium-90 industrial radioactive source industry chain mainly consists of three segments: upstream radioactive raw material supply, midstream radioactive source manufacturing, and downstream industrial applications. The upstream source primarily consists of Strontium-90, a fission product generated during the reprocessing of spent nuclear reactor fuel. Because Sr-90 is a byproduct of nuclear fission, its extraction and separation require a mature nuclear fuel reprocessing system. Therefore, institutions globally with large-scale supply capabilities are mainly concentrated in Russia, China, and a few other countries with advanced nuclear industries. The midstream segment includes processes such as Sr-90 purification, core manufacturing, activity calibration, sealing and encapsulation, welding, leak detection, quality certification, and radioactive source transportation licensing. Sealing technology and radiation safety control constitute the core technological barriers in the industry. Downstream applications mainly include industrial thickness gauges, density gauges, level gauges, static electricity elimination equipment, industrial calibration equipment, and process control systems. The steel, aluminum foil, copper foil, lithium battery materials, plastic film, paper, and chemical industries are the main end-users.
