A Single-Photon Avalanche Diode chip is a semiconductor optoelectronic device designed for ultra-low-light detection and photon counting. Its core structure typically consists of a Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode element combined with a quenching resistor, enabling the device to generate a detectable avalanche pulse from a single incident photon. This makes SPAD chips suitable for time-of-flight ranging, 3D depth sensing, low-light imaging, quantum detection, biophotonics, and high-timing-resolution measurement. Commercial formats include single-pixel devices, array chips, sensor chips with on-chip readout, and related modules, with major production concentrated in Japan, Europe, North America, and China. Their key performance metrics generally include photon detection efficiency, dark count rate, timing jitter, crosstalk suppression, array integration capability, and system-level compatibility. Hamamatsu explicitly defines a SPAD as a semiconductor device capable of detecting single-photon events and notes that it is also referred to as a Geiger-mode avalanche diode.

A Silicon Photomultiplier chip is a solid-state photodetector built from many Geiger-mode microcells connected in parallel, and can be understood as a high-gain photon-counting chip formed by integrating multiple SPAD-based elements on one device. Each microcell is typically composed of an avalanche photodiode in series with a quenching resistor, while all microcells are connected in parallel to generate a summed output signal. This structure preserves single-photon sensitivity while providing a larger effective detection area and output characteristics better suited to system integration. SiPM chips are widely used in PET, nuclear medicine, radiation detection, LiDAR reception, biosensing, and high-sensitivity scientific instruments, with major production also concentrated in Japan, Europe, North America, and China. Their competitiveness is mainly defined by photon detection efficiency, dark count rate, microcell density, dynamic range, temperature stability, packaging consistency, and timing performance. Hamamatsu explicitly states that MPPC is also known as SiPM and is a solid-state detector composed of multiple Geiger-mode APD pixels, while Broadcom likewise describes SiPMs as microcell-based array devices for ultra-sensitive precision measurement.

In 2025, global production of SPAD and SiPM chips reached approximately 140 million to 190 million units. Based on the commercial product mix, mainstream FOB prices were generally in the range of USD 4.8 to USD 5.8 per unit, with high-volume consumer and industrial SPAD ToF devices priced materially below high-performance SiPM products, while automotive-grade SPAD depth sensors and premium SiPM devices remained in higher price bands.

SPAD and SiPM chips are evolving from high-end scientific and specialist medical detectors into foundational devices for next-generation intelligent sensing and precision measurement platforms. Their momentum does not come from sensitivity alone. It comes from combining single-photon-level detection, fast timing response, stronger solid-state integration potential, and smaller system footprints, enabling applications that once depended on traditional vacuum devices or more complex optical architectures to move toward scalable, compact, and reusable semiconductor solutions. The strongest demand is currently being driven by three major tracks: SPAD-based ToF ranging, 3D depth sensing, and automotive and industrial LiDAR; SiPM-based PET, nuclear medicine, and radiation detection; and ultra-low-light, high-timing-resolution detection for biophotonics, quantum technologies, and advanced scientific instruments. As automotive sensing, robotics, smart infrastructure, medical imaging, and advanced industrial inspection continue to expand, SPAD and SiPM devices are moving from isolated niche uses toward broader system-level penetration.

That expansion, however, is not linear. The SPAD route still needs to address dark count noise, crosstalk, afterpulsing, readout complexity in larger arrays, and ambient-light interference, while the SiPM route must continue improving the balance among microcell density, dynamic range, temperature drift, packaging yield, and end-system compatibility. At the same time, downstream customers are shifting away from purely parameter-driven purchasing and toward full-system fit, including emitter-receiver coordination, on-chip TDC and algorithm processing, packaging and optics-window matching, long-term supply assurance, and qualification capability. The decisive factor in future competition will therefore not be limited to who can make the highest-performance chip, but who can convert device performance, manufacturing consistency, and design-in efficiency into scalable commercial value across medical, automotive, industrial, and scientific applications.
