An RDMA NIC is a class of server-grade network interface device designed for data centers, artificial intelligence computing, high-performance computing, cloud infrastructure, and high-throughput storage systems. Its core function is to establish a low-latency, high-bandwidth, and low-CPU-overhead data transfer channel between hosts, allowing application data to bypass the traditional kernel protocol stack and multiple memory copies and to be read from or written directly between local memory and remote memory. These products are typically delivered as PCIe adapters, OCP adapters, mezzanine cards, SmartNICs, DPU cards, or embedded RNIC IP, and commonly support RoCE, RoCEv2, iWARP, InfiniBand, or dual-mode Ethernet and InfiniBand protocols. They improve cluster communication efficiency through queue pairs, memory registration, DMA engines, congestion control, flow control, virtualization offload, storage protocol offload, and security acceleration. Key performance indicators include port speed, port count, PCIe generation, message latency, throughput, queue scale, virtual function count, protocol offload scope, and power consumption. The products are mainly used in large model training and inference clusters, GPU servers, cloud hosts, bare-metal services, hyperconverged infrastructure, NVMe-oF storage, distributed databases, low-latency financial trading, media production, and high-speed data acquisition. Typical customers include cloud service providers, server vendors, AI computing centers, enterprise data centers, research institutions, and storage system integrators. As AI cluster scale expands and east-west traffic grows rapidly, RDMA NICs are evolving from traditional network adapters into core components for connectivity, offload, isolation, programmable processing, and infrastructure acceleration.

The industrial positioning of RDMA NICs is shifting from a server peripheral to a critical performance component of data center infrastructure. Traditional Ethernet communication relies on the host CPU, kernel protocol stack, and multiple memory copies, which can create latency, jitter, and CPU resource bottlenecks in large-scale AI training, distributed storage, cloud virtualization, and high-performance computing workloads. RDMA NICs use hardware queues, DMA transfer, memory registration, congestion control, and protocol offload to enable direct memory access between servers, thereby increasing throughput, reducing latency, and freeing host CPU resources. The value of these products is reflected not only in higher port speeds, but also in the combined improvement of cluster communication efficiency, GPU utilization, storage I/O efficiency, and cloud platform resource density. From a product form perspective, RDMA NICs are developing into a supply system that includes traditional RNICs, converged Ethernet adapters, SmartNICs, DPU cards, and embedded RNIC IP. Traditional RNICs mainly provide RoCE, iWARP, or InfiniBand communication capabilities and are suitable for standard servers and high-performance storage systems. SmartNICs add network virtualization, traffic processing, telemetry, and security offload capabilities, reducing the burden of software switching and virtual networking on the host. DPU cards further integrate processor cores, dedicated acceleration engines, and programmable data planes, allowing them to handle infrastructure tasks related to bare metal, containers, virtual machines, storage, security, and operations. Embedded RNIC IP targets FPGAs, self-developed chips, and specialized acquisition systems, providing RoCE or RDMA capabilities for differentiated hardware platforms. The common direction across these product routes is to migrate more communication, storage, and security tasks from the CPU to the NIC side, transforming the network interface from a passive forwarding device into a programmable, offload-capable, and isolated infrastructure processing node.
