Radiation hardening, or rad-hard, is the process of making electronic components or systems resistant to damage or malfunction caused by ionized radiation. This is especially critical for applications in space, nuclear power plants, military operations, and high-altitude aviation, where exposure to radiation is inevitable.The space sector is currently the most active and fastest-growing driving force. Low Earth orbit (LEO) broadband constellation programs, represented by SpaceX's Starlink and OneWeb, are launching tens of thousands of satellites. This creates a massive demand for radiation-hardened electronic devices (especially those in the 30-50 krad(Si) range). Traditional, expensive radiation-hardened devices are insufficient to fully meet such large quantities and cost requirements, significantly driving the development of radiation-enhanced design (RHBD) and commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) screening services, aiming to find the optimal balance between performance, reliability, and cost. Although fewer in number than LEO constellations, deep space exploration missions to the Moon, Mars, and asteroids, as well as high-value geostationary orbit (GEO) communication and military satellites, remain the core customers for high-end, high-performance radiation-hardened devices. These missions require tolerance levels of ?100 krad(Si), driving the development of cutting-edge technologies.Satellites are evolving from simple transponders into "data centers in the sky," requiring on-orbit data processing, AI identification, and encrypted communication. This has spurred an urgent demand for radiation-hardened high-performance computing (HPSC), AI accelerators, and high-capacity storage, representing the most technologically advanced growth areas in the market.Global nuclear powers (such as the US, Russia, China, and France) are all upgrading their nuclear arsenal command, control, and communication systems (NC3).
