A plastic-bonded negative electrode is a high-performance negative electrode structure used in nickel-cadmium batteries. It is typically made by fixing cadmium-based active material onto a conductive metallic support or screen with a polymer binder, creating a thin, lightweight, and mechanically stable electrode layer. In commercial practice, it is rarely marketed as a stand-alone component; instead, it is integrated into complete Ni-Cd battery systems, most commonly in combination with sintered positive electrodes to form a sintered/plastic-bonded electrode architecture, or S/PBE design. Physically, it appears as a plate-type internal electrode assembled together with separators, alkaline electrolyte, terminals, and housing in vented or low-maintenance Ni-Cd cells. Its principal technical function is to increase hydrogen overvoltage at the negative electrode, thereby reducing overcharge current and water consumption while improving charge acceptance, specific power, vibration resistance, and performance over a wide temperature range. For this reason, the technology is widely adopted in mission-critical applications such as aircraft starting and emergency power, onboard railway backup systems, UPS, engine starting, and other industrial standby duties.

The core opportunity in the plastic-bonded negative electrode market does not lie in becoming a mass-volume, open commodity arena like mainstream lithium battery materials. Its value is embedded in mission-critical equipment systems where failure tolerance is extremely low, qualification cycles are long, replacement costs are high, and life-cycle management is tightly controlled. In aviation, rail transportation, industrial control, utilities, and special-duty equipment, buyers are not merely optimizing for energy density; they require a robust balance among wide-temperature operability, shock and vibration resistance, long service life, and maintainability. Downstream demand is increasingly bifurcated.
