The lithium niobate wafer process involves first feeding high-purity niobium/lithium raw materials into a platinum crucible melt according to a specific ratio. A single crystal ingot is then grown at a controlled temperature and rate along a selected crystal orientation using the Czochralski method, followed by controlled cooling annealing. The ingot is then oriented, its outer diameter is rounded, and the main positioning edges or grooves are marked according to X/Y/Z oriented patterns. Next, it is sliced ??into thin sheets using a diamond wire saw/internal circular saw. These sheets undergo double-sided grinding and parameter-controlled chemical mechanical polishing to achieve a mirror-like, low-damage surface. Following this, ultra-pure cleaning and megasonic particle removal processes are performed. Finally, the wafers are inspected for orientation error, TTV/warpage, surface roughness, and optical scattering/defects before release.
Global demand is being driven by high-speed optical modules/co-packaged optical interconnects for data centers and high-end piezoelectric applications on the 5G?6G RF side. The wafer route is clearly converging towards larger sizes and lower defect densities. At the same time, the LNOI thin-film substrate chain is upgrading the competition from 'being able to grow and cut' to long-term yield, uniformity and cross-regional supply resilience.
