A linear TIA IC is a high-speed analog front-end chip used at the optical receiver side. Its core function is to convert weak photocurrent generated by a PIN photodiode, APD, or photodiode array into a low-noise, wide-bandwidth, amplitude-linear voltage signal, providing an equalizable raw waveform for downstream DSP, CDR, ADC, or coherent receiver chains. Unlike limiting TIAs that are oriented toward binary decision, linear TIAs emphasize the balance among transimpedance gain, noise, bandwidth, group delay, overload recovery, output swing, and power consumption, and are used in PAM4, multilevel intensity modulation, coherent I/Q reception, LPO linear direct-drive, and pulsed ranging scenarios. Products are typically supplied as bare die, wafer-level devices, flip-chip assemblies, wire-bonded die, or compact packaged ICs, and often integrate RSSI monitoring, I2C control, programmable gain, output equalization, current clamping, and CDR interface functions. Major customers include optical module manufacturers, optical device packaging companies, silicon photonics engine vendors, communications equipment suppliers, data center interconnect solution providers, LiDAR vendors, and test and measurement equipment manufacturers. In the value chain, linear TIA ICs sit between photodetectors and digital signal processing or analog decision circuitry, determining receiver sensitivity, dynamic range, signal integrity, and module power consumption, and are key analog electrical chips for 400G, 800G, and 1.6T high-speed optical interconnects and coherent transmission upgrades.
