In 2025, global hybrid pulse capacitor production reached approximately 7712 k units, the average price is 15 usd/unit. Hybrid pulse capacitors are asymmetric energy storage devices that fall between supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries. One side uses a pre-doped carbon anode for lithium-ion intercalation energy storage, while the other side uses an activated carbon cathode for double-layer electrostatic energy storage. They feature high pulse current output, low self-discharge, and long cycle life. They are often used as single cells or connected in parallel with lithium thionyl chloride batteries to provide power for scenarios such as IoT/AMI instruments/GPS tracking that require long-term low power consumption but occasional large pulses.

Large manufacturers include companies like COROS Battery and VINATech. Domestically, however, there is still significant room for development in the hybrid pulse capacitor market.

Manufacturing Process and Market Trends:

The key to manufacturing hybrid pulse capacitors lies in integrating the 'capacitor positive electrode' and the 'battery negative electrode' into the same cell. First, high specific surface area activated carbon positive electrode slurry and graphite/hard carbon negative electrode slurry are coated separately onto aluminum foil and copper foil current collectors, then dried, rolled, and cut into electrode sheets. These are then assembled into cells using a polyolefin separator in a strictly dew-point controlled dry environment through stacking or winding. Subsequently, the cells are packaged in aluminum shells or aluminum-plastic film soft packs and vacuum-baked to remove water and inject electrolyte. The most crucial and challenging step is the controlled pre-lithiation of the negative electrode to stably introduce lithium ions into the negative electrode active material, establishing a working voltage window and energy density advantage. Afterward, the cells undergo formation aging and leakage current screening to eliminate self-discharge defects before delivery.

Globally, demand is driven by regenerative braking and start-stop energy storage for automobiles, frequency regulation and voltage stabilization of power grids, industrial UPS, and instantaneous backup power for high-density computing cabinets in recent years. Mass production bottlenecks still lie in the stringent requirements for environmental control and consistency in the pre-lithiation process. Iteration is converging towards in-situ/dry pre-lithiation, higher withstand voltage windows and lower self-discharge, and safer solid or gel electrolyte systems. Japanese supply chains still hold more advantages in patents and process discipline, but the Chinese industrial chain is accelerating its catch-up from materials to cells and shifting the focus of competition from single indicators to long-term consistency and system-level synergy capabilities.
