The Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) is a critical nuclear safety system in nuclear power plants. It rapidly supplies cooling water to the reactor core in the event of a Loss-of-Coolant Accident (LOCA) or other abnormal conditions leading to significant coolant loss, preventing fuel assembly overheating, meltdown, and the release of radioactive materials. An ECCS typically consists of a high-pressure injection system, a low-pressure injection system, an accumulator, a residual heat removal system, and related monitoring and control devices. It can be automatically or manually activated depending on the severity of the accident, achieving continuous cooling and core heat removal. This system is widely used in pressurized water reactors (PWRs), boiling water reactors (BWRs), and some advanced nuclear reactors, and is a core component of the nuclear power plant's defense-in-depth system. The ECCS has extremely high requirements for equipment reliability, response speed, and redundancy design. It typically employs multiple independent safety channels and seismic and radiation-resistant designs to ensure core safety even under extreme conditions. With the development of advanced nuclear power technology and small modular reactors (SMRs), the Emergency Core Cooling System is upgrading towards passive safety, intelligent monitoring, and high reliability.
