Active Exploits Protection refers to a category of cybersecurity software and subscription services that combines evidence of real-world exploitation, exploit probability, asset exposure, business context and enforceable security controls to protect organizations against attacks targeting software vulnerabilities before permanent patches can be fully tested and deployed. The category encompasses network IPS and next-generation firewall vulnerability signatures, web application and API virtual patches, endpoint and server anti-exploit controls, host intrusion prevention, memory exploit mitigation, runtime application self-protection, runtime virtual patching, industrial protocol inspection and automated policy orchestration.

Active Exploit Protection is not simply a renamed vulnerability-scanning, patch-management or endpoint-security market. It represents a converging security capability built around three operational questions: which vulnerabilities are being exploited in real attacks, which organizational assets are genuinely exposed to those exploits, and what enforceable control can immediately reduce the risk while permanent remediation is still pending. According to our research, the underlying capabilities have historically been distributed across network IPS, web application firewalls, endpoint anti-exploit controls, host-based virtual patching, runtime application self-protection, operational-technology security and vulnerability intelligence. This creates a relatively broad vendor longlist, but the number of providers capable of connecting exploitation evidence to an actual blocking mechanism is substantially smaller. Proofpoint?s May 2026 launch of a product explicitly named Active Exploits Protection illustrates the movement from dispersed features toward a recognizable product category. However, the market still lacks standardized revenue reporting, so this study applies a narrow scope and counts only the identifiable portions of security subscriptions, software licenses and content services directly attributable to exploit prioritization and compensating protection.

The supply structure is divided between large integrated cybersecurity platforms, specialist protection vendors and regional security providers. Large platforms benefit from extensive endpoint deployments, firewall installed bases, global edge networks and broad threat telemetry, enabling them to distribute new IPS, WAF or endpoint protections across large customer populations. Specialist providers compete through runtime application instrumentation, memory-level exploit prevention, moving-target defense, patchless protection, API-specific virtual patching and industrial-protocol inspection. Their revenue bases are generally smaller, but their capabilities can be particularly valuable in encrypted application traffic, legacy software, operational-technology environments and systems that cannot tolerate frequent restarts. China has developed meaningful domestic supply in host virtual patching, cloud WAF, government and enterprise network security, and RASP-based emergency protection. Japan retains strength in endpoint anti-exploit technology, while Taiwan has produced a notable OT virtual-patching specialist. The distinction between the core formal list and the extended longlist is therefore based primarily on the existence of an enforceable protection control, rather than corporate size, public listing status or availability of financial disclosure.

Demand is being driven less by the absolute number of newly published vulnerabilities than by the widening gap between the speed of exploit development and the time required for enterprises to complete permanent remediation. Financial institutions, government agencies, telecommunications operators, healthcare organizations, manufacturers and critical-infrastructure owners frequently require compatibility testing, change approvals and scheduled maintenance windows before deploying vendor patches. Industrial controllers, embedded systems and end-of-life software may remain unpatchable for extended periods. These conditions create sustained demand for network-, host-, application- and edge-level compensating controls. Public-sector emphasis on known-exploited-vulnerability catalogs, exploit-probability models and internet-exposed systems is also changing procurement criteria. Security teams increasingly need to demonstrate not only how many vulnerabilities they have discovered, but whether they can identify the vulnerabilities associated with current attack activity and measurably reduce the corresponding exposure. This favors providers with strong threat research, rapid rule production, broad telemetry and automated enforcement, while reducing the differentiation of platforms limited to static scanning and risk dashboards.

Future competition will focus on the quality of exploit intelligence, the speed and safety of policy generation, false-positive control, breadth of enforcement points and integration with permanent remediation workflows. Generative AI can accelerate vulnerability analysis, exploit-chain interpretation and the creation of compensating rules, but automatically produced virtual patches must still be validated against application availability, operational safety and explainability requirements. Large vendors are likely to continue integrating exposure management, endpoint, network, cloud and application protection through acquisitions and platform consolidation. Specialist RASP, OT and patchless-protection vendors may become attractive acquisition targets because they provide enforcement capabilities that broad vulnerability-management platforms lack. The market faces potential substitution from faster vendor hot-patching, immutable cloud workloads and stronger default operating-system exploit mitigations. Nevertheless, permanent remediation cannot completely eliminate compatibility constraints, maintenance windows or the interval between exploit discovery and patch deployment. Active Exploit Protection is therefore expected to remain an important compensating control and to grow faster than the broader mature segments of traditional IPS and vulnerability scanning.
