XLPE insulation compound for power cable refers to crosslinkable polyethylene compounds used as the main insulation layer in power cables. Through peroxide, silane or limited irradiation crosslinking, polyethylene forms a three-dimensional network structure, improving heat resistance, dielectric strength, aging resistance and long-term operating reliability. Key upstream materials include high-purity LDPE/PE base resin, LLDPE/POE and other polyolefins, peroxide crosslinking agents, silane coupling agents, antioxidants, tree-retardant additives, stabilizers, processing aids, clean packaging materials and compounding equipment. Downstream applications include LV/MV distribution cables, urban underground cables, industrial power cables, wind and solar collection cables, HV AC transmission cables, EHV cables, submarine cables and HVDC cables.

In 2025, global XLPE insulation compound for power cable production reached approximately 800 kilotons, with an average global market price is $1,800 per ton.

From a global industry perspective, XLPE insulation compound has become one of the mainstream insulation materials for power cables, serving distribution networks, transmission lines, urban underground cables, renewable grid connection, industrial power supply, rail transit, data centers and land or submarine power projects. Compared with conventional thermoplastic polyethylene, cross-linked XLPE provides better thermal deformation resistance, mechanical stability, dielectric performance and long-term operating reliability, allowing cables to operate under higher temperature, electric stress and load fluctuation.

In terms of industry trends, XLPE insulation compounds for power cables are moving toward higher cleanliness, lower defect levels, stable crosslinking, lower by-products, stronger water-tree resistance, stronger electrical-tree resistance, longer service life and wider processing windows. Standard LV and MV XLPE compounds focus more on processability, crosslinking efficiency, hot-set performance and cost efficiency, while HV and higher-grade compounds place much stronger emphasis on controlling contaminants, gels, metallic particles, moisture, scorch marks and interface defects, because these micro-defects can initiate partial discharge, electrical treeing, water treeing and insulation breakdown. Cable manufacturing is also upgrading toward triple-layer co-extrusion, dry curing, closed material handling, clean feeding, inline defect inspection and optimized degassing to improve insulation uniformity, cable yield and long-term reliability.

The main growth drivers come from three areas. First, global grid expansion, distribution-network renewal, urban underground cabling, renewable grid connection, offshore wind export and industrial electrification are increasing demand for stable and reliable XLPE insulation compounds; the IEA also warns that grids may become a bottleneck for clean energy transitions and electricity security if they are not upgraded fast enough.
