Strongly acidic cation exchangers are polymeric materials containing strongly acidic functional groups such as sulfonic acid (?SO?H), enabling reversible exchange of cations across a wide pH range. They are typically based on a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer matrix and functionalized through sulfonation to introduce sulfonic acid groups. Because these groups remain ionized under acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions, strongly acidic cation exchangers provide stable and high-capacity ion exchange performance and are widely used in water treatment, softening, demineralization, hydrometallurgy, and chemical separation processes.

In 2025, the global production of strongly acidic cation exchangers is estimated at 107,000 tons, with an average price of US$3,200 per ton.

The upstream of strongly acidic cation exchangers includes suppliers of styrene and divinylbenzene (DVB) monomers, sulfonation reagents (such as concentrated or fuming sulfuric acid), initiators and dispersants, as well as suspension polymerization and post-treatment equipment manufacturers. Raw materials account for approximately 50%?65% of total cost, followed by sulfonation, washing and drying processes. As styrene-based feedstocks originate from the petrochemical chain, costs are sensitive to crude oil price fluctuations, and sulfonation processes require significant environmental and safety compliance investment.

Downstream applications are concentrated in industrial water softening, boiler feedwater systems for power plants, condensate polishing, ultrapure water systems for electronics and semiconductors, chemical separation, pharmaceutical purification, hydrometallurgy and food processing. These exchangers contain sulfonic acid functional groups (?SO?H) and maintain stable exchange capacity across a full pH range (0?14), effectively removing Ca??, Mg??, Na? and K? ions. Structurally, they are generally classified into gel-type and macroporous-type resins: gel-type offers higher exchange capacity and lower cost, while macroporous-type provides better resistance to organic fouling and is suitable for high-organic-content systems.

Industry trends focus on increasing exchange capacity, improving mechanical and compressive strength, reducing organic leachables (TOC), optimizing particle size uniformity and enhancing oxidation and fouling resistance. In semiconductor-grade ultrapure water applications, extremely low metal leaching and minimal organic residue are critical performance indicators. With the development of advanced manufacturing and new energy industries, higher requirements are placed on long-term system stability and resin service life.

Gross margins typically range from 20% to 35%. Standard industrial-grade products generally achieve 20%?28%, while electronic-grade, nuclear-grade and high-stability customized products may reach 30%?35%. As a mature bulk functional material, market competition is relatively intense with evident price pressure; however, in high-end segments, companies with advanced polymerization and sulfonation control technologies maintain technical advantages. Overall, this is a large-scale and stable-demand market closely linked to power generation, chemical processing, electronics and environmental industries.
