Samarium-Iron-Nitrogen Permanent Magnetic Powder for Bonded Magnets (SmFeN Magnetic Powder for Bonded Magnets) is a powdered rare-earth permanent magnetic material based primarily on hard magnetic Sm-Fe-N phases. It is produced through alloy preparation or chemical synthesis, nitriding, particle refinement, particle-size control, and surface treatment. Commercial products are mainly classified as isotropic and anisotropic SmFeN magnetic powders and can be compounded with binders such as PA, PPS, PP, epoxy resin, CPE, or rubber for injection molding, compression molding, extrusion, and calendering.

SmFeN materials can theoretically be developed through both sintered and bonded routes. However, because the Sm-Fe-N magnetic phase is prone to decomposition at elevated temperatures, the densification and magnetic-property retention of sintered SmFeN magnets remain technically challenging. The sintered route is therefore still under continuous development, while current commercialization is concentrated in magnetic powder, magnetic compounds, and bonded magnets. SmFeN magnetic powder for bonded magnets is the core raw material determining the magnetic performance, corrosion resistance, and cost structure of the finished magnet.

In 2025, the global production of SmFeN Magnetic Powder for Bonded Magnets is estimated at 650 tons, with a unit price of approximately US$38.08 per kilogram and a gross profit margin of approximately 18%?28%.

Compared with ferrite, SmFeN delivers substantially higher magnetic performance, making it suitable for compact magnetic components requiring a combination of miniaturization, lightweight design, environmental resistance, and magnetic strength.

Isotropic SmFeN powder offers flexible processing, does not require an orientation magnetic field, and generally provides a more controllable cost structure. Its maximum energy product can typically exceed 10 MGOe under specified powder-testing conditions, supporting applications in miniature motor strips, flexible magnets, magnetic components used in humid environments, and functional magnetic materials. Anisotropic SmFeN powder can achieve higher remanence and energy product through magnetic-field orientation, with selected high-performance grades reaching approximately 40 MGOe or above under specified powder-testing conditions. Such powders are generally processed through orientation injection molding or high-performance compression molding and are used in premium water-pump and oil-pump motors, automotive auxiliary motors, sensors, camera motors, encoders, and precision magnetic rings.

New-energy vehicles and robotics are expected to create additional growth opportunities, although near-term demand will be concentrated in thermal-management pumps, oil pumps, actuators, position sensors, encoders, camera motors, cooling fans, and miniature auxiliary drives rather than traction motors or primary robot-joint motors. High-performance sintered NdFeB will remain dominant in high-power-density applications. SmFeN is more likely to achieve initial substitution in selected bonded NdFeB and high-performance ferrite applications where corrosion resistance, moisture resistance, complex-shape molding, and medium-to-high magnetic performance are required.
