These precursors are soluble and processable, enabling film casting, coating, fiber spinning, or varnish formulation before undergoing thermal or chemical imidization to form the final polyimide with excellent thermal stability (>400?C), dielectric performance, mechanical strength, and chemical resistance. The supply chain begins upstream with petrochemical-derived aromatics (benzene, toluene, xylene) that are converted into high-purity dianhydrides and diamines, along with electronic-grade solvents; midstream players polymerize these into PAA solutions or polyimide varnishes tailored for applications such as flexible printed circuits (FPC), semiconductor insulation layers, aerospace composites, and high-temperature adhesives; downstream, electronics, aerospace, automotive electrification, and advanced materials sectors convert the precursor into films, coatings, molded parts, or composite matrices, forming a value chain closely linked to semiconductor packaging, display panels, EV power electronics, and high-reliability industrial systems. In 2025, global polyimide precursor production reached about 68,000 tons, with installed capacity around 95,000 tons per year. Prices typically range from USD 18,000?35,000 per ton, and the industry operates at an average gross margin of about 41%.
