In 2025, global sales of monosodium glutamate (MSG) residue reached 2 million tons, with an average selling price of approximately US$200 per ton. The industry's gross profit margin was approximately 13%-26%. MSG residue is a byproduct of the MSG (monosodium glutamate) production process, produced through microbial fermentation to extract glutamic acid. It is dried, pulverized, and processed. Upstream: Primarily using starchy raw materials such as corn and wheat, with coal and electricity supply ensuring the stability of the fermentation process; Midstream: MSG producers extract glutamic acid through bio-fermentation technology, and the remaining residue is dried and pulverized to produce MSG residue; Downstream: Feed companies (such as CP Group and New Hope Group) use it as a protein raw material to replace soybean meal, agricultural companies (such as Sinochem Fertilizer) develop organic fertilizer products, and aquaculture farmers use it for pond fertilization.

The demand for cost reduction in the feed industry is driving the application of alternative raw materials; fluctuations in soybean meal prices and import dependence are prompting livestock companies to seek low-cost protein sources. Monosodium glutamate (MSG) residue has a high crude protein content and costs only 60%-70% of soybean meal. Through resource utilization, companies can convert wastewater into 4.4 million tons of feed raw materials, alleviating protein resource shortages and reducing environmental treatment costs. Policy subsidies (such as organic fertilizer promotion subsidies) further accelerate the application of MSG residue in agriculture.
Large-scale expansion of aquaculture drives demand for specialized fertilizers. China accounts for over 60% of global aquaculture production, leading to a continuous increase in demand for pond fertilization and feed nutrition. Monosodium glutamate (MSG) residue is rich in amino acids and trace elements. When processed into granular fertilizer, it can promote the growth of aquatic plants, stabilize water quality, and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers.
