A Methane Oxidation Catalyst (MOC) is a heterogeneous catalytic material designed to convert methane (CH?)?a potent greenhouse gas?into carbon dioxide (CO?) and water (H?O) through controlled oxidation, typically in exhaust streams or low-concentration vent gases. It is widely used in natural gas engines, coal mine ventilation air methane (VAM) treatment systems, landfill gas abatement, and lean-burn turbine exhaust control. The catalyst system usually consists of active noble metals (primarily palladium or palladium?platinum alloys) dispersed on high-surface-area oxide supports such as alumina, ceria-zirconia, or perovskite-type mixed oxides, coated onto monolithic ceramic or metallic honeycomb substrates. The supply chain begins upstream with precious metal mining and refining (Pd, Pt), alumina and rare-earth oxide production, and cordierite or FeCrAl substrate manufacturing; midstream involves catalyst formulation (impregnation, washcoating, calcination), monolith coating, canning into stainless steel housings, and system integration; downstream includes OEM integration into exhaust aftertreatment modules for gas engines and turbines, methane abatement reactors for mining and landfill operators, and industrial emission control retrofits. Demand is driven by methane emissions regulations, carbon credit mechanisms, and decarbonization mandates across energy, mining, waste management, and heavy industry sectors. In 2025, global methane oxidation catalyst production was about 24,000 tons, supported by total installed capacity near 30,000 tons per year, with average price USD 60,000-90,000 per ton, and 29% gross margin.
